Don't fork me on GitHub

We are strong supporters of Free Software (that is, Free as in Freedom).
Without Free Software, you have absolutely no control over your systems, nor the data they hold.
You should never trade freedom for convenience.

We oppose all forms of centralisation and the corresponding abdication of responsibility.

Non-Free software, and thus lack of control, goes against our moral and ethical principles.

We do not endorse GitHub nor any other centralised source code hosting platform.

We recommend self-hosting, or at least hosting on free-software, such as:

GitHub core is non-free software.
GitHub has censored numerous repositories.
Commercial entities will always focus on THEIR best interests, NOT yours.
GitHub was acquired by Microsoft in mid-2018, meaning potential tighter integration with Microsoft's (non-free) cloud services and other commercial products.
Copilot is a for-profit product - developed and marketed by Microsoft and their GitHub subsidiary - that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to automatically generate code interactively for developers. The AI model was trained (according to GitHub's own statements) exclusively with projects that were hosted on GitHub, including many licensed under copyleft licenses. Most of those projects are not in the "public domain", they are licensed under copyleft/FOSS licenses. These licenses have requirements including proper author attribution and, in the case of copyleft licenses, they sometimes require that works based on and/or that incorporate the software be licensed under the same copyleft license as the prior work. Microsoft and GitHub have been ignoring these license requirements. In addition to these legal issues, the ethical implications of GitHub's choice to use copylefted code in the service of creating proprietary software, are grave.
Despite their recent claims to the contrary, Microsoft have never been known for their benevolence.
GitHub can and will suspend your private repos if your premium account lapses.
As per their terms-of-service
GitHub has the right to suspend or terminate your access to all or any part of the Website at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice, effective immediately. GitHub reserves the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason at any time.
Why would any right-minded individual use their service?
As a software professional with extensive technical knowledge, why would you not make use of the readily available tools to maintain control over your own code?
